A tribute to the human side of sport, which remains in the background during competition. Three stories that recount one era each. The legendary and unfortunate 1908 London Marathon which was won and then lost due to disqualification by Dorando Pietri, the small Italian athlete with an imperfect race and a sick heart. The last hours of the great champion Fausto Coppi, who died at only 41 years old, consumed by malaria after a safari in Africa: a delicate portrait of a man condemned to the loneliness of winners.
The legendary Comaneci and his perfect ten at the Montreal Olympics of 1976 reemerges through the passion of gymnastics coach Cesare and Monica, a struggling, young 30-year old athlete. Finally, Nives Merei and Romano Benet, mountaineers of our time and a couple in both sport and life, who cling tenaciously to the tough rope of existence.
